Answer
Bear Paw Mountain
Answer
Bear Paw Mountain
Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce surrendered at Bear Paw Mountain in Montana in 1877.
The surrender followed the Nez Perce War, which began after attempts to force the band from its traditional homeland in the Pacific Northwest. Chief Joseph, Looking Glass, White Bird, and other leaders led a retreat of more than 1,000 people toward Canada.
The U.S. Army caught the group near Bear Paw Mountain in north-central Montana in late September 1877. After a siege lasting several days, Chief Joseph surrendered on October 5, about 40 miles from the Canadian border.
Chief Joseph is widely associated with the surrender speech beginning, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” The precise wording and later transcription have been debated, but the speech remains a major symbol of forced removal and resistance.
