At which London Underground station was the first escalator installed in 1911?

The story behind the answer

The first escalator installed on the London Underground was installed at Earl’s Court in 1911.

The escalator opened at Earl’s Court on 4 October 1911. It connected the station’s District line platforms with the deeper Piccadilly line platforms, making transfers easier than using stairs alone.

Early escalators were unfamiliar to many passengers, so staff were reportedly present to help people use them. The installation marked an important change in station design: escalators made deep-level stations more practical and allowed passenger circulation to increase without relying entirely on lifts.

Earl’s Court is served by both the District and Piccadilly lines and has long been an important interchange in west London. The first escalator there should not be confused with the London Underground’s longest escalator, which is at another station and is a separate record.
