At which London location was Jesuit priest Henry Garnet executed after the Gunpowder Plot?
Answer
St Paul’s Churchyard
Answer
St Paul’s Churchyard
Henry Garnet was executed at St Paul’s Churchyard in London after the Gunpowder Plot.
Garnet, the superior of the Jesuit mission in England, was arrested after the failed conspiracy of 1605. He had received information about the plot in confession and maintained that the seal of confession prevented him from reporting it to the authorities.
He was tried for treason and executed on 3 May 1606. St Paul’s Churchyard was a prominent execution site beside St Paul’s Cathedral, and the public nature of the punishment reflected the government’s determination to present the prosecution as a warning to Catholics and potential traitors.
This location is sometimes confused with Tyburn, London’s best-known site for public hangings, or Tower Hill, which was commonly associated with executions of nobles. Garnet’s execution took place at St Paul’s Churchyard instead.
