Robert Catesby and Thomas Percy died at Holbeche House after the 1605 Gunpowder Plot failed.
Holbeche House was a moated house in Staffordshire where several surviving plotters gathered after the discovery of the explosives. They hoped to raise support through a wider Catholic rising, but their plans collapsed as government forces pursued them.
On 8 November 1605, a force led by the Sheriff of Worcestershire attacked the house. Catesby and Percy were killed by the same volley of gunfire, according to contemporary accounts. Their deaths ended the armed resistance and enabled officials to capture other participants.
Holbeche House is sometimes confused with the buildings connected with the planned explosion in London. The conspirators were arrested or killed in several locations after the plot was exposed; Holbeche House was the final armed stand of Catesby’s group.
