At which Guildford cemetery is Lewis Carroll buried?
Answer
Mount Cemetery
Answer
Mount Cemetery
Lewis Carroll is buried at Mount Cemetery in Guildford.
After Carroll died in Guildford on 14 January 1898, his funeral was held at nearby St Mary’s Church. His body was then interred at Mount Cemetery, a burial ground on the western side of the town. The cemetery is also commonly known as Guildford Cemetery.
Carroll’s grave is part of a wider Dodgson family presence there. Several of his sisters and his younger brother Edwin Heron Dodgson are also buried in the cemetery. This makes Mount Cemetery an important site for understanding the family behind the Lewis Carroll pen name, not merely a location associated with a famous author.
The name can cause minor confusion because “Mount Cemetery” and “Guildford Cemetery” refer to the same burial ground. The other options are cemeteries in or associated with London and Surrey, but they are not Carroll’s resting place. Carroll’s funeral church and burial cemetery were separate locations: St Mary’s Church hosted the service, while Mount Cemetery received his remains.
