At which English university did C.S. Lewis teach before moving to Cambridge?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
Before moving to Cambridge, C.S. Lewis taught at the University of Oxford.
Lewis held academic posts at Oxford for decades, including a fellowship and tutoring position at Magdalen College. He became a prominent scholar of English literature while also writing fiction, literary criticism, and Christian apologetics.
In 1954, Lewis accepted the newly created chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He remained connected with Oxford, however, and continued to live at The Kilns near the city.
A common mix-up is to identify Cambridge as Lewis’s only university workplace. Cambridge was the later stage of his academic career; Oxford was where he established his reputation as a teacher and scholar.
