At which Chicago school did Georgia O'Keeffe study art under John Vanderpool from 1905 to 1906?
Answer
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Answer
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under John Vanderpool from 1905 to 1906.
O'Keeffe enrolled at the Chicago school after graduating from high school in Virginia. John Vanderpool, an academic painter and teacher, instructed her there. Her studies formed part of a conventional art education based on drawing, painting, and observation.
She later attended the Art Students League of New York, where she studied under William Merritt Chase and won the school's 1908 still-life prize. These early institutions preceded the radical experimentation that eventually made her a major American modernist.
The Chicago school is sometimes confused with the Art Institute of Chicago museum. They are historically related but distinct institutions: the school is an art college, while the museum is the major art museum located beside it. O'Keeffe's teacher during this Chicago period was John Vanderpool.
