At which Chicago art school did Georgia O'Keeffe study from 1905 to 1906?
Answer
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Answer
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1905 to 1906.
O'Keeffe entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1905, shortly after completing her secondary education. The institution was one of the leading American art schools of the period, and its curriculum emphasized drawing, painting, and close study of traditional artistic models.
Her time in Chicago was important but relatively brief. She left after about a year because of illness and later continued her training at the Art Students League in New York. At the League, she studied under William Merritt Chase and won a scholarship connected with her performance in a still-life competition.
The Chicago school should not be confused with the Art Students League, where O'Keeffe studied from 1907 to 1908. Nor should it be confused with Columbia University Teachers College, where she later studied with Arthur Wesley Dow. Dow’s ideas about composition eventually had a major effect on her artistic development.
