At which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis hold an academic position from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held an academic position at Magdalene College, Cambridge, from 1954.

He became the first holder of the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University. The appointment came after many years teaching at Oxford, where he had been a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford.

The two colleges have similar names and are often confused. Lewis’s long Oxford association was with Magdalen College, while his Cambridge professorship was at Magdalene College, which is spelled with a final “e.” He moved into the Cambridge role in 1954 and held it until his death in 1963.

His Cambridge appointment gave him a formal professorship after years of influential teaching and writing at Oxford. It also connected his academic career directly with his specialist interests in medieval and Renaissance English literature.
