At which Cambridge college did Charles Darwin study?

Charles Darwin studied at Christ's College, Cambridge. He entered the college in 1828 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, initially preparing for the Anglican clergy at his father's request.

Darwin had previously studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but he disliked medical training and did not complete a medical career. At Cambridge, he was more enthusiastic about natural history, geology, hunting, and collecting beetles than about formal coursework. His friendship with the botanist John Stevens Henslow proved especially important, because Henslow helped develop Darwin's scientific interests and later recommended him for the Beagle voyage.

Darwin completed his ordinary degree in 1831, shortly before joining HMS Beagle. Cambridge's influence was not limited to classroom study: the university connected him with leading naturalists and provided the intellectual network that helped launch his career.

A common mix-up is confusing Christ's College with Trinity College or St John's College, other famous Cambridge institutions. Darwin also studied at the University of Edinburgh earlier, but the Cambridge college associated with his degree and pre-voyage education was Christ's College.
