At which battle did the Spartan commander Brasidas die in 422 BCE?

The story behind the answer

The Spartan commander Brasidas died at the Battle of Amphipolis in 422 BCE.

The battle took place during the Archidamian War, the first phase of the wider Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. Brasidas had led a successful Spartan campaign in northern Greece, where he captured several Athenian allies, including Amphipolis.

An Athenian force commanded by Cleon marched to recover the city. Brasidas launched a sudden attack, routing the Athenians, but he was mortally wounded during the fighting. Cleon also died in the battle.

Brasidas’s death helped make peace possible. The following year, Sparta and Athens agreed to the Peace of Nicias, although the treaty did not permanently end their rivalry.
