At which battle did the Greek navy defeat Xerxes I’s fleet in 480 BCE?

The story behind the answer

The Greek navy defeated Xerxes I’s fleet at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE. The battle took place in the narrow straits between the island of Salamis and the coast of Attica, near Athens.

Although the Persian fleet was larger, the confined waters reduced its numerical advantage. Greek ships, commanded overall by Themistocles’ strategy, maneuvered effectively in the straits and inflicted heavy losses on the Persian force. Xerxes watched the engagement from a throne or viewing position on the mainland, according to ancient accounts.

Salamis did not immediately end the Persian invasion, but it forced Xerxes to withdraw much of his army and navy. The following year, Greek forces defeated the Persian army at Plataea and the remaining Persian naval forces at Mycale. Salamis is therefore remembered as a decisive Greek naval victory in the Greco-Persian Wars.
