Answer
Battle of Carrhae
Answer
Battle of Carrhae
Parthian forces defeated Marcus Licinius Crassus’s Roman army at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BCE.
Carrhae was fought near the Mesopotamian city of Carrhae, usually identified with modern Harran in southeastern Turkey. The Parthian commander Surena led a smaller but highly mobile force that relied on mounted archers and heavily armored cataphracts.
Roman infantry struggled against sustained arrow fire in the open terrain. Parthian horse archers used the famous “Parthian shot,” firing backward while retreating or turning in the saddle. Crassus attempted negotiations after severe losses, but he was killed during the encounter or its immediate aftermath.
The defeat damaged Roman prestige and demonstrated that Parthia was a major military power. It also helped establish the Euphrates as a long-term strategic frontier between Rome and the Iranian empires.
