At which battle did Cyrus the Great defeat Croesus of Lydia around 547 BCE?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Thymbra was where Cyrus the Great defeated Croesus of Lydia around 547 BCE.

The battle followed Cyrus’s conquest of the Median Empire and his expansion westward into Anatolia. Croesus, ruling the wealthy kingdom of Lydia, challenged Cyrus after consulting the oracle at Delphi. The fighting took place near Sardis, the Lydian capital, and Cyrus’s victory destroyed Lydian independence.

Ancient accounts describe Cyrus using camels to disrupt Croesus’s cavalry, although details in the surviving narratives are debated. The fall of Sardis brought Lydia and much of western Anatolia into the growing Achaemenid realm.

The Battle of Thymbra is sometimes confused with the later capture of Sardis itself. Thymbra was the decisive field battle; Sardis was the capital that fell afterward.
