Art Students League
Answer
Art Students League
Georgia O’Keeffe studied at the Art Students League in New York before developing her abstract style.
She attended the Art Students League from 1907 to 1908 and studied under the painter William Merritt Chase. The school emphasized observational drawing, painting from the model, and academic training. O’Keeffe won a scholarship prize there for a still-life painting.
After this early training, she became dissatisfied with conventional academic methods and temporarily stopped making art. She later encountered the ideas of Arthur Wesley Dow, whose approach emphasized composition, line, and personal expression rather than simply reproducing appearances.
O’Keeffe’s mature abstractions emerged from that shift in outlook. The Art Students League was therefore an important early stage, but it was not the institution where her best-known abstract language was formed.
