*Beauty and the Beast* was nominated for Best Picture at the 64th Academy Awards.
The ceremony took place on March 30, 1992, honoring films released during 1991. The animated film made history as the first animated feature ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, at a time when the category had only five nominees.
The nomination went to producer Don Hahn. The film ultimately lost Best Picture to *The Silence of the Lambs*, but it won two Oscars: Best Original Score for Alan Menken and Best Original Song for “Beauty and the Beast,” written by Menken and Howard Ashman.
The ceremony number can cause confusion because the event occurred in 1992, while the film’s release year was 1991. The 64th Academy Awards therefore refers to the ceremony, not the calendar year in which the film premiered. The film also received nominations for Best Sound and two additional original songs, “Belle” and “Be Our Guest.”
