At which 1994 auto show did Volkswagen unveil the Concept One?

The story behind the answer

Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One at the 1994 North American International Auto Show.

The concept appeared in Detroit as Volkswagen explored how a modern car could revive the visual identity of the original Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at Volkswagen’s California design studio, the Concept One used rounded forms, separate-looking fenders, circular lamps, and a high roofline to evoke the historic Type 1 without reproducing its mechanical layout.

Public reaction was strong enough to persuade Volkswagen to develop a production car. The New Beetle eventually launched in 1997 for the 1998 model year. A common source of confusion is the show’s location-based name: the North American International Auto Show was widely known as the Detroit Auto Show, so “Detroit Motor Show” may appear in historical references for the same event.

Volkswagen continued refining the idea after the debut. A red convertible version was shown at Geneva in 1994 according to the New Beetle history, while another development concept appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. Those later appearances do not change the original venue for the Concept One unveiling.
