Answer
Battle of Dorylaeum
Answer
Battle of Dorylaeum
First Crusade forces defeated a Seljuk army near Dorylaeum at the Battle of Dorylaeum in 1097.
The battle took place on 1 July 1097 in Anatolia, during the crusaders’ march toward Jerusalem. The crusader vanguard, led by Bohemond of Taranto, was attacked by a larger Seljuk force commanded by Kilij Arslan I and Danishmend allies. The initial assault placed the crusaders in serious danger.
Bohemond’s troops formed a defensive camp and held out until the main crusader army arrived. Reinforcements led by figures including Godfrey of Bouillon and Raymond IV of Toulouse helped turn the engagement into a crusader victory. The Seljuks withdrew, leaving the route across much of Anatolia open.
Dorylaeum was not the final victory of the First Crusade. The crusaders still faced long sieges, supply shortages, disease, and combat before capturing Jerusalem in 1099. The battle is also distinct from the 1147 Battle of Dorylaeum, fought during the Second Crusade.
