At what NES Tetris level did Willis Gibson trigger his 2023 game crash?

The story behind the answer

Willis Gibson triggered the 2023 NES Tetris game crash at level 157.

On December 21, 2023, Gibson—known online as Blue Scuti—became the first human player widely credited with reaching the NES version’s “kill screen.” The game froze after he reached level 157, ending a run that lasted about 40 minutes and produced 6,850,560 points.

The achievement was not a planned ending built into Tetris. NES Tetris has no conventional victory screen, and its aging code can malfunction at extreme levels. Specific combinations of line clears, piece sequences, and internal memory behavior can send the program into graphical glitches, corrupted sound, or a total crash. Level 29 had long been treated as the practical human limit because piece speed becomes extraordinarily fast, but advanced rolling and hypertapping techniques pushed players far beyond it.

The number 157 is sometimes confused with level 155, another known crash opportunity, or level 255, where the level counter can eventually loop. Gibson’s milestone specifically refers to his game-ending crash at level 157.
