Beyoncé won her first Grammy Award at age 19, for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
The award recognized Destiny’s Child’s recording of “Say My Name” at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001. Beyoncé was born on September 4, 1981, so she was 19 when the ceremony took place.
The victory came during Destiny’s Child’s most successful period, after the group’s lineup had settled around Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. “Say My Name” also helped establish the group as one of the leading R&B acts of the early 2000s.
A common mix-up is counting earlier nominations rather than wins. Beyoncé had been nominated before her first victory, but the 2001 ceremony was the point at which she received her first Grammy win. She later became one of the most awarded artists in Grammy history.
