At the Vienna New Year's Concert, which orchestra performs the annual New Year's Day program?
Answer
Vienna Philharmonic
Answer
Vienna Philharmonic
The Vienna Philharmonic performs the annual Vienna New Year's Concert.
The concert is held each New Year's Day in Vienna's Musikverein and is best known for waltzes, polkas, and other works by the Strauss family and related Viennese composers. Its international television broadcast has made the event one of the world's most recognizable classical-music celebrations.
The concert began in 1939, when the orchestra presented a program devoted to Johann Strauss II and other Viennese music. It was originally called a Philharmonic Academy. The New Year's Day format became especially established after World War II, and the event later developed its familiar sequence of encores.
The program traditionally concludes with the Blue Danube waltz and Radetzky March, although the Blue Danube is often interrupted by audience applause before the music resumes. The conductor changes from year to year; the orchestra, not a permanent annual conductor, is the consistent performing body.
