At the start of the flood, how old does Genesis say Noah was?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah was 600 years old when the flood began.

Genesis 7:6 introduces the flood by stating that Noah was six hundred years old when the waters came upon the earth. The age belongs to the biblical chronology and is presented as a specific age at the event’s beginning.

Genesis later says Noah lived for 350 years after the flood and died at the age of 950. That later figure is sometimes confused with his age when the Ark voyage started, but they describe different points in the story.

The ages in Genesis are part of its genealogical framework. They should not be treated as modern demographic evidence, since the narrative uses exceptionally long lifespans for several early patriarchs.
