Gaga arrived at the 2019 Costume Institute benefit in a voluminous pink Brandon Maxwell gown. During a choreographed entrance on the Met steps, she removed layers to reveal a black gown, a hot-pink outfit, and finally black underwear with fishnet tights and platform boots.
The sequence lasted roughly 16 minutes and made the outfit change part of the fashion statement itself. It suited the gala’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme by treating red-carpet dressing as performance, spectacle, and deliberate exaggeration.
Brandon Maxwell was Gaga’s longtime stylist before establishing his own fashion label, which helped explain the close creative relationship behind the appearance. The four looks are sometimes attributed to Gaga herself or described only as a performance, but Maxwell designed them.
