Réveillon is Brazil’s New Year’s Eve celebration, and Rio de Janeiro stages one of the country’s best-known public events along the Copacabana waterfront. Large crowds gather on the beach and its promenade for concerts, religious and cultural traditions, midnight fireworks, and the beginning of January 1.

The fireworks are launched from barges positioned offshore, allowing the display to be viewed across the broad crescent-shaped beach. Copacabana’s hotels, apartments, and shoreline create a distinctive urban backdrop for the celebration, which attracts visitors from Brazil and abroad.

Copacabana is sometimes confused with other famous Rio beaches, particularly Ipanema and Leblon. Those beaches are also important parts of Rio’s coastline, but the city’s signature mass Réveillon gathering is associated with Copacabana Beach.
