Elizabeth Tower is the famous London landmark illuminated beside the New Year's Eve fireworks.
The tower stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster and contains the Great Bell, commonly called Big Ben. “Big Ben” technically refers to the bell, not the tower, although the name is frequently used for the whole landmark. The tower was completed in 1859 as part of Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin’s rebuilding of Parliament.
London’s modern riverside fireworks display developed into a major annual event in the 21st century, with the London Eye and the Palace of Westminster forming its best-known backdrop. Elizabeth Tower’s clock faces are lit during the celebration, making the landmark easy to recognize in television broadcasts. The tower was officially renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
