Lakshmi Puja is commonly performed on the new-moon night of Diwali. Families clean and decorate their homes, light lamps, prepare offerings, and pray for prosperity in the coming year. In some traditions, Kubera is invoked alongside Lakshmi because the ritual concerns both the blessing of wealth and its guardianship or preservation.
A visible reminder appears in certain puja procedures: devotees may draw a swastika on a safe, vault, or place where valuables are kept and worship it as a symbol connected with Kubera. Business communities may also include account books, coins, and financial instruments in the ceremony.
Kubera should not be confused with Varuna, Agni, or Indra. Varuna is linked with cosmic waters and moral order, Agni is the sacred fire and divine messenger, and Indra is associated with storms and kingship. Regional Lakshmi Puja customs differ, so Kubera’s inclusion is common in some traditions rather than mandatory in every household.
