As of October 2023, Facebook had approximately 3.05 billion monthly active users. Meta reported that figure for September 30, 2023, in its third-quarter earnings release published on October 25.
A monthly active user was a registered, logged-in Facebook user who visited Facebook through the website or a mobile device, or used Messenger while also registered on Facebook, during the preceding 30 days. This metric measured Facebook itself, not the combined audience of Meta’s entire app family.
That distinction matters because Meta separately reported 3.96 billion monthly active people across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. It also reported 2.09 billion daily active Facebook users for September 2023, so the daily and monthly figures should not be confused.
Facebook’s audience had passed one billion monthly users in October 2012 and two billion in June 2017. The 3.05-billion figure represented roughly 3% year-over-year growth and showed that the platform remained one of the world’s largest social networks, even as usage patterns shifted toward other Meta services.
