As of August 2024, how many blogs does Tumblr host?

As of August 2024, Tumblr hosted over 500 million blogs.

The figure refers to the number of blogs hosted on Tumblr, not the number of people using the service. One person can operate a primary blog and multiple secondary blogs, so blog totals and user totals measure different things. The total also includes blogs that may be inactive or rarely updated.

The milestone appeared in coverage of Automattic’s August 2024 announcement that Tumblr’s backend would be migrated to technology derived from WordPress. Reports described the platform as containing more than half a billion blogs while emphasizing that the Tumblr front-end experience was intended to remain familiar.

The answer is deliberately approximate: “over 500 million” does not claim that the exact total was precisely 500 million. The alternative figures are lower than the reported threshold, while “over 600 million” is not the canonical August 2024 figure. Tumblr’s blog count has continued to change over time, so the date is essential.
