As of 2020, more than 35 million Volkswagen Golfs had been sold worldwide.
That figure represented the cumulative success of the Golf since production began in 1974. Volkswagen developed the car as the front-engine, front-wheel-drive successor to the rear-engine Beetle, with Giorgetto Giugiaro involved in the original Mk1 design. The Golf helped establish the modern European compact hatchback formula and became the name associated with the “Golf class.”
The total includes multiple generations and a broad family of derivatives, including hatchbacks, estates, convertibles, performance models and other market-specific versions. By the time the eighth generation arrived around 2019–2020, the Golf had become Volkswagen’s best-selling model and one of the world’s most successful cars.
The wording “over 35 million” is tied to the period around 2019 and 2020, rather than a permanent lifetime total. Later Volkswagen milestones exceeded that number, with the company reporting more than 37 million Golfs after five decades of production. Therefore, 35 million is the appropriate historical answer for a question explicitly framed around 2020.
The Golf’s total is also separate from sales of the Beetle: the Golf eventually surpassed the Beetle’s production total in 2002.
