The Golf’s fifth generation, the Mk5, introduced the 1.4 TSI twincharger engine.
Volkswagen launched the engine in the Golf GT around 2005–2006. The compact 1.4-litre petrol unit combined direct fuel injection with two forms of forced induction: a belt-driven supercharger for low-speed response and an exhaust turbocharger for higher engine speeds. This arrangement helped reduce turbo lag while delivering strong power from a small engine.
The Mk5 ran from 2003 to 2008, and the twincharged 1.4 TSI was one of its most technically notable engines. Later Golf generations also used engines carrying the TSI name, which can cause confusion, but not every later 1.4 TSI was the same twincharger design. The Mk5 Golf GT’s 170-PS version is particularly associated with this technology.
