Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, creating a new category that combined a mobile phone, iPod, and internet communicator.
Apple announced the first iPhone on January 9, 2007, and released it in the United States on June 29, 2007. Steve Jobs presented it as three devices in one: a phone, a widescreen iPod, and an internet communications device.
The original iPhone used a multitouch screen instead of a physical keyboard. Its software ecosystem later expanded through the App Store, which launched in 2008 and helped make the iPhone a platform rather than simply a handset.
The iPhone is often confused with the iPad because both use Apple software and multitouch interfaces. The iPad debuted in 2010, three years after the first iPhone, and became a separate product line.
