Answer
Declaration of Independence
Answer
Declaration of Independence
America250 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776. The document announced that the Thirteen Colonies regarded themselves as free and independent states rather than territories subject to the British Crown.
Thomas Jefferson drafted the original text as part of a five-member committee, although Congress edited the draft substantially. The Declaration lists grievances against King George III and presents a philosophical case for independence based on natural rights and the right of revolution.
America250 therefore commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration’s adoption, not the later ratification of the Constitution. The engrossed parchment copy, bearing the famous signatures, was produced and signed over a period that extended beyond July 4, with most delegates signing on August 2, 1776.
