Alphabet owns YouTube, the video-sharing platform founded in 2005 by former PayPal employees.
YouTube was created by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, and the first video, titled “Me at the zoo,” was uploaded by Karim on April 23, 2005. Google acquired YouTube in 2006 in an all-stock transaction valued at about $1.65 billion.
The service lets users upload, watch, share, and comment on videos. It grew from a site for short personal clips into a major home for music, news, education, livestreams, and professional channels.
YouTube remains a Google product, while Alphabet became Google's parent company in 2015. This corporate structure means YouTube is associated with Alphabet through Google rather than operating as an unrelated independent company.
