Algebra is a branch of what field of study?

The story behind the answer

Algebra is a branch of mathematics. It studies symbols, quantities, relationships and the rules used to manipulate mathematical expressions and equations.

In elementary algebra, letters such as x and y represent unknown or changeable values. This allows a general statement, such as x + 3 = 7, to describe a whole class of problems rather than just one arithmetic calculation. Algebra therefore extends arithmetic by introducing variables and systematic methods for solving relationships.

The subject has a much broader meaning beyond school equations. Modern algebra examines abstract structures, including groups, rings and fields, and these ideas connect algebra with number theory, geometry, logic and computer science. Linear algebra focuses on vectors, matrices and systems of linear equations and is essential in physics, engineering, statistics and machine learning.

The word algebra comes from the Arabic title of a ninth-century mathematical work by Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. A common misconception is that algebra is only about finding an unknown number; in advanced mathematics, it also investigates the underlying structures and operations that make mathematical systems work.
