After Santos is elected, what job does Josh Lyman get?
Answer
White House Chief of Staff
Answer
White House Chief of Staff
After Santos is elected, Josh Lyman becomes White House Chief of Staff.
Josh first leaves the Bartlet White House to manage Matt Santos’s presidential campaign. Santos is a Democratic congressman from Texas whose candidacy initially looks unlikely, but Josh helps build the campaign, recruits Leo McGarry as the running mate, and guides Santos through the convention and general election.
Santos ultimately defeats Republican Senator Arnold Vinick in the fictional 2006 presidential election. After the result, Josh is appointed chief of staff in the incoming Santos administration. The appointment completes his progression from political strategist and Bartlet deputy chief of staff to the senior manager of a new White House.
Josh’s job is occasionally confused with roles held by other characters. He does not become vice president, secretary of state, or press secretary. Those positions involve different responsibilities, while the chief of staff manages access to the president, coordinates senior advisers, and helps turn the president’s agenda into an operating plan. In the series finale, Josh is shown meeting privately with President Santos in the Oval Office as he begins that new role.
