The 1975–76 American Freedom Train traveled across 48 contiguous states.
The train was a traveling exhibition created for the United States Bicentennial. Its red, white, and blue cars displayed American artifacts and cultural objects, bringing a national history exhibit to communities across the continental United States.
The tour began in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and ended on December 31, 1976. More than seven million Americans visited during the journey, while many more watched the train pass along its route.
The figure 48 refers to the contiguous states, not the full modern United States. Alaska and Hawaii were not included in the train’s route because the exhibition traveled by rail through the continental mainland.
