According to the Sumerian King List, Alulim was the first king of Eridu.
The Sumerian King List begins its account of kingship before the flood at Eridu, one of southern Mesopotamia’s oldest major settlements. Alulim is presented as the city’s first ruler, followed by Alalngar and later kings associated with other cities.
The list is not a modern chronological history. It combines legendary reign lengths, traditional dynasties, and historically attested rulers to present kingship as a divinely authorized institution that moved from city to city.
Alulim is therefore best understood as a legendary or traditional primordial king in the text. He should not be confused with Enmebaragesi, a later ruler of Kish who is often regarded as one of the earliest kings named in a historically supported context.
