According to the Old Testament, the prophet Ezekiel saw a valley filled with dry bones.
The vision appears in Ezekiel 37. God brings Ezekiel to a valley covered with bones and asks whether they can live. At Ezekiel’s command, the bones join together, receive sinews and flesh, and are covered with skin. Breath then enters them, and they stand as a vast army.
The passage explains the vision as a symbol of the restoration of Israel. The bones represent the people of Israel, who feel cut off and without hope. God promises to bring them back and restore them to their land.
The image is often treated as a general story about resurrection, but its immediate biblical interpretation concerns national restoration after catastrophe and exile.
