According to Exodus, Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
In the biblical account, the Israelites reached Mount Sinai after leaving Egypt. Moses went up the mountain, where God established a covenant with the people and gave laws that included the Ten Commandments. Exodus describes thunder, lightning, a cloud, and a loud trumpet sound surrounding the mountain during this event.
The mountain is also called Horeb in several biblical passages, and the relationship between the names has been interpreted in different ways by scholars and religious traditions. Because of this, some readers may see “Mount Horeb” in related passages rather than “Mount Sinai.” The traditional location of Mount Sinai is in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, although its exact historical location is debated.
Mount Sinai should not be confused with Mount Zion, which is associated with Jerusalem, or Mount Nebo, where Deuteronomy says Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death.
