According to the New Testament, the Parable of the Prodigal Son tells of a son who returns after wasting his inheritance.

Jesus tells the parable in Luke 15. A younger son asks his father for his share of the estate, leaves home, and spends the money recklessly. After becoming destitute, he returns and plans to ask for a servant’s place in the household.

Instead, his father welcomes him with celebration. The older son becomes angry because he has remained obedient and believes the celebration is unfair. The father answers that rejoicing is appropriate because the younger son was lost and has been found.

The story is also called the Parable of the Two Sons or the Forgiving Father. “Prodigal” traditionally means wastefully extravagant, although the parable’s central emphasis is the father’s generous welcome and restoration.
