According to the New Testament, the Gospel of Matthew records Jesus’ genealogy from Abraham.
Matthew opens with a genealogy that begins with Abraham and proceeds through David and the kings of Judah to Joseph, the husband of Mary. The list is arranged into three groups of fourteen generations, ending with Jesus. Matthew’s opening therefore presents Jesus within Israel’s story and emphasizes his connection with Abraham and David.
Luke also contains a genealogy, but it appears later in the Gospel, after Jesus’ baptism, and traces the line backward to Adam and ultimately to God. The two genealogies differ in structure and in many names, which has led to extensive discussion among interpreters. They should not be treated as identical lists.
Mark begins with Jesus’ ministry rather than a genealogy, while John begins with a theological prologue about the Word. Matthew’s genealogy is therefore a distinctive feature of its opening chapter and its presentation of Jesus as the Messiah within Jewish history.
