According to the New Testament, Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. The four Gospels describe followers discovering the empty tomb after the Sabbath, when they came early on the first day.

In the Jewish calendar used in the Gospel narratives, the Sabbath ran from Friday evening to Saturday evening. The first day therefore began after the Sabbath and corresponds to Sunday in the later Christian calendar.
