According to the New Testament, in which town was Jesus born?
Answer
Bethlehem
Answer
Bethlehem
According to the New Testament, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Gospel of Matthew places Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem of Judea, during the reign of Herod the Great. The Gospel of Luke also identifies Bethlehem as the birthplace and connects the journey there with a registration ordered under Roman rule.
Bethlehem was a small town south of Jerusalem and was associated with King David, who was also said to have been born there. This link helped explain the Christian belief that Jesus fulfilled expectations about a future ruler from David’s line.
The accounts differ in some surrounding details, including the role of the census and the visit of the Magi. Nazareth, not Bethlehem, is the town most closely associated with Jesus’ upbringing, which is why he is often called Jesus of Nazareth. Bethlehem remains central to Christian Christmas traditions and is traditionally identified with the Church of the Nativity.
