According to the New Testament, twelve baskets of leftovers were collected after Jesus fed the 5,000.
The feeding miracle appears in all four canonical Gospels. The accounts describe five loaves and two fish being used to feed a crowd of about 5,000 men, besides women and children in Matthew’s account. After the crowd ate, the disciples gathered twelve baskets of remaining pieces.
The number twelve is commonly read in connection with the twelve disciples and, more broadly, the twelve tribes of Israel. The Gospels do not all use identical wording for the containers, so English translations may say baskets, basketsful, or similar terms.
This event is distinct from another feeding miracle involving about 4,000 people. In that later account, the disciples collect seven baskets, which is a frequent source of confusion.
