According to the Gospels, which three disciples witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospels, Peter, James, and John witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration.

Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9 describe Jesus taking these three disciples up a high mountain. There, his appearance changes, and Moses and Elijah appear speaking with him. A bright cloud or divine voice then identifies Jesus as God’s beloved Son. The scene is presented as a revelation to a select inner circle rather than to all the disciples.

Peter, James, and John are also prominent in other private moments, including the raising of Jairus’s daughter and Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane. James is James son of Zebedee, not James son of Alphaeus, another apostle in the Gospel lists.

The Gospels do not agree on the mountain’s name. Later Christian tradition often associates the event with Mount Tabor, while some interpreters have proposed Mount Hermon. Because the question concerns the witnesses, the stable answer is the three named disciples.
