According to the Gospels, what food did Jesus use to feed 5,000 men?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospels, Jesus used five loaves and two fish to feed 5,000 men.

The miracle is reported in all four canonical Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The crowd had followed Jesus to a remote place, and the disciples were concerned that there was not enough food. In John’s account, a boy provides the five barley loaves and two small fish.

Jesus gives thanks, distributes the food, and the crowd eats until satisfied. The Gospel accounts then describe the disciples collecting twelve baskets of leftover pieces. The number 5,000 refers specifically to men in the wording of Matthew, Mark, and Luke; those accounts also mention women and children separately or imply that they were present.

This event is distinct from the later feeding of the 4,000, which uses seven loaves and a different number of fish. That second miracle is recorded in Matthew and Mark.
