According to the Gospel of Matthew, in which town was Jesus born?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

Matthew places Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem of Judea, during the reign of Herod the Great. The Gospel connects the town with the expected birthplace of the Messiah and later describes the visit of the Magi.

The Gospel of Luke also identifies Bethlehem as Jesus’ birthplace, although its birth narrative uses a different sequence of events. Luke says Joseph and Mary traveled there because of a census associated with Quirinius. Both Gospels, however, locate the birth in Bethlehem.

Bethlehem was a small town south of Jerusalem and was traditionally associated with King David, who was also said to have come from Bethlehem. A common mix-up is confusing Jesus’ birthplace with Nazareth, the Galilean town where he was raised.
