According to the Gospel of Matthew, how many loaves were used to feed the 5,000?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospel of Matthew, five loaves were used to feed the 5,000.

Matthew 14 says that Jesus took five loaves and two fish, blessed the food, broke it, and gave it to the disciples to distribute. The crowd ate and was satisfied, and twelve baskets of pieces were collected afterward. Matthew counts about 5,000 men, besides women and children.

The feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle of Jesus, apart from the resurrection, reported in all four canonical Gospels. The accounts differ in some details, but the five loaves and two fish are central to the familiar version.

A separate feeding story in the Gospels involves 4,000 people and seven loaves. That second account is a frequent source of confusion, especially because it ends with a different number of baskets.
