According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ genealogy ultimately reaches God before Adam.
Luke 3:23–38 presents Jesus’ ancestry in reverse order, beginning with Jesus and moving backward through Joseph, David, Abraham, Noah, and other ancestors. It ends with Adam, described as the son of God. The wording makes God the final source named in the genealogy.
This differs from Matthew’s genealogy, which begins with Abraham and moves forward toward Jesus. Matthew organizes the ancestry around major stages in Israel’s history, while Luke extends it beyond Abraham to humanity’s first biblical ancestor. Christian traditions interpret these genealogies in different ways, including differences over Joseph’s legal or biological lineage.
Readers sometimes confuse the final name in Luke’s list with Adam. Adam is the last human ancestor named; God is the relationship stated immediately afterward. The passage therefore gives a distinctive answer when the question asks whose son Adam was.
