According to the Gospel of Luke, what was the name of John the Baptist’s father?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospel of Luke, John the Baptist’s father was named Zechariah.

Luke 1 introduces Zechariah as a priest from the priestly division of Abijah. His wife, Elizabeth, is described as a descendant of Aaron. The couple is portrayed as righteous but childless and advanced in age. While Zechariah is serving in the Temple, the angel Gabriel announces that Elizabeth will bear a son who will become John the Baptist.

Zechariah initially questions the announcement and is unable to speak until the child’s birth. When relatives expect the baby to receive a family name, Elizabeth says he must be called John. Zechariah confirms the name in writing, and his speech returns.

The character should not be confused with the prophet Zechariah from the Hebrew Bible or with other New Testament figures who share similar names. Luke’s account specifically identifies him as Elizabeth’s husband and John’s father, making the answer distinct.
